As the first week of our Adaptive Surf camp 2023 comes to an end, we caught up with Bryce’s mom, Marcie…. This is what she had to say.. ❤
Sometimes, as the parent of a special needs child, it can be difficult to find a place where you can allow your child to be themselves, enjoy their experience (in their own way) and develop relationships in which those around them not only accept, but include them while respecting their differences. I understand this is a lot to ask, but Surf for All has managed to be that place for my son Bryce and I. From the administrators to the instructors, to the volunteers, to the parents, a community has been built!!
This community not only allows our children to learn about surfing and a respect for the ocean, it integrates them into a family that celebrates their accomplishments, cheers on their attempts and gives them a sense of belonging. While Bryce may not be able to express this to others, I know his time with his Surf for All “team” brings him such happiness and connection.

Everyone in this group plays a part in making this happen! Bryce loves surfing, he is fearless in the water! Surf for All allows him to do what he loves most, but surfing is only one part of this amazing experience. Surf for All allows him to enjoy the ocean while providing us with so much more!
For me, as his mom, things that may seem small or common to others mean the world to me. Those that run up to greet Bryce with a big welcome before we even get on the beach, those that take him by the hand and guide him, those that get him to hug, high five or fist bump them and those that are willing to put in the work to ensure that Bryce engages (which is not always easy) and always do so with kindness and warmth, you are my heroes!!

I know I’m not alone in these feelings as I have met some incredible parents (another great part of this community), who have shared similar sentiments with me. I know I’ve gone on for too long and most won’t read this far but this “thank you” is long overdue!! We could not be more appreciative for our years with Surf for All and Skudin Surf. Cliff and Will Skudin, Jeanine Sorensen and all who are a part of this community, please know that for families like mine, you make magic happen and you’ll always be a part of our extended family.💙🌊🤙🏻
A direct quote from Bryce that says it all, “I want waves. More ocean.”
